Training zones are everywhere.
Runners use them. Cyclists use them. HYROX athletes use them. Smartwatches, apps and online calculators all try to estimate them.
But here is the problem:
Most people are training from zones that are guessed, estimated or based on generic formulas.

That means we use testing data to understand how your body responds to different intensities, rather than relying only on age-predicted heart rate or smartwatch estimates.

Why Training Zones Matter
Training zones help organise intensity.
They help answer questions such as:

The Problem With Generic Zones
Many training zones are based on simple formulas such as:
220 minus age
This is used to estimate maximum heart rate.
The issue is that maximum heart rate varies massively between individuals. Two people of the same age can have very different maximum heart rates and very different threshold responses.
If their zones are based on the same formula, one person may be training too hard while the other is training too easy.
Generic zones can be a rough starting point, but they are not individualised enough for serious training.
The Problem With Watch-Based Zones
Smartwatches can be useful.
They help track training load, heart rate, pace, distance and trends over time.
But most watch-based zones are still estimates.
They may use predicted maximum heart rate, pace algorithms, GPS, wrist heart-rate data, previous training data and proprietary calculations.
These can be helpful, but they are not the same as directly measuring your physiological response during a controlled test.
A watch can tell you what happened.
Testing helps explain what it means.
How We Build Better Zones

Blood lactate testing helps us identify how your body responds as exercise intensity increases.
At lower intensities, lactate may remain relatively stable. As intensity rises, lactate begins to increase. At higher intensities, it may rise more rapidly.

lactate threshold
lactate turn point
sustainable intensity
high-intensity tolerance
This is valuable because lactate gives us a direct view of how your body is managing the demands of exercise.
VO₂ and Ventilatory Data
VO₂ testing helps us understand oxygen uptake and breathing response.
As exercise intensity increases, oxygen demand rises. Ventilation changes. Breathing becomes harder. At certain intensities, the body’s response changes more noticeably.
This information can help support threshold identification and show how costly different intensities are.
VO₂ data is especially useful when combined with lactate, heart rate and pace or power.
Heart Rate Data
Heart rate is useful, but it needs context.
Heart rate can be affected by:
sleep
stress
caffeine
heat
hydration
fatigue
illness
accumulated training load
emotional state
This means heart rate should not be interpreted in isolation.
During testing, we use heart rate alongside lactate, VO₂, pace, power and perceived effort. That gives us a much more reliable picture.
Heart rate is then useful for day-to-day training once the zones have been anchored to real physiological markers.
Pace and Power Data
For runners, pace matters.
For cyclists, power matters.
For HYROX athletes, both running pace and station demands matter.
When we test, we link physiological response to the external workload. That means we can identify the pace or power that corresponds with certain physiological points.
This is important because training has to be practical.
You need to know what to do when you leave the lab.
Why Easy Training Is Often Too Hard
One of the most common things we see is that people train their easy sessions too hard.
They think they are doing aerobic work, but their lactate, heart rate, breathing and perceived effort suggest they are sitting at a higher intensity than intended.
This matters because easy training has a purpose.
It supports aerobic development, recovery, volume tolerance and consistency.
If easy sessions are too hard, athletes may accumulate more fatigue, struggle to recover, and reduce the quality of their harder sessions.
Accurate zones help prevent this.
Why Threshold Training Needs Precision
Threshold training can be very effective, but it needs to be placed correctly.
Too easy, and it may not create the desired stimulus.
Too hard, and it becomes a different type of session with more fatigue and less sustainability.
